“My grandmother was the most gracious person I’ve ever met. So beautiful, so humble. I remember being in college and talking to her on the phone. She would ask me the most specific questions about things I had told her months before. She was a great listener and she really cared. She treated other people the same way: she was warm and friendly, and she remembered what they told her. It made them --- it made me --- feel like a million dollars. I try to remember that when I talk to someone. I try to remember specific things from the conversation that I can ask about later if I run into them again, especially if they’re having a particularly hard time or something really great has just happened. My grandmother had Parkinson’s, and the end of her life was very challenging, but even though she was probably in a lot of pain, you’d never have known it. She didn’t want attention on herself. She still focused outward, on other people. She always wanted to know how you were and what was going on in your life. When I think about physical gifts that she gave me, nothing significant comes to mind. But she gave me something a lot more important: her unconditional love and affection.
“I think I’ve missed her more lately because I’ve been struggling with anxiety issues for the past year or so. That’s a really common thing --- a lot of people deal with anxiety --- but I wish she were here to talk to about it. I don’t know if she had any experience with it, but even if she didn’t understand completely, she would be very supportive. Having a person listen to you the way she did is something you don’t come across very often in life. It’s extremely rare.”
