Prince: "When I was a little boy, my father sometimes took me with him to work on the docks in Savannah. I watched the big ships come in and wondered where they'd been and what the people on them had seen. I told myself that someday I was going to see what they had seen, and I did. Elsie and I have traveled to 80 countries and all 7 continents."
Elsie: "He didn't really want to go to Antarctica, but I talked him into it. They recommended we wear nine layers of clothes. Prince did, but after I had on the first five layers, I didn't put any more on. The temperature got up to 15 degrees in the daytime. That wasn't cold to somebody from Chicago!"

Prince and Elsie came to Memphis from Illinois 21 years ago. They had no connections or relatives in our city, but chose it because it was warm, was a hub for Northwest Airlines, had a good freeway system, boasted several universities and hospitals, enjoyed a vibrant arts scene (theater / symphony), and had good county schools. Prince is a retired college professor, enjoys writing poetry, and (along with Elsie) has had the pleasure of meeting both Gwendolyn Brooks and Maya Angelou. After the move to Memphis, Prince volunteered as a storyteller with the National Civil Rights Museum and then worked there for several years as a tour guide. Elsie is a retired health administrator. Their son, Charvey Mac, is a singer/songwriter/musician residing in Memphis.
