"I get up every day and go to a place where I feel that I’m making a difference: Porter-Leath. I’ve been there for 13 years, working in IT, Facilities, and Custodial. These are low-income kids who don’t always have good facilities in their own neighborhoods, so we create great playgrounds and make sure everything is clean, painted, and safe. We work to provide a good environment for the children. One of the things Porter-Leath does that I really like is the foster grandparent program where elderly people have an opportunity to get out of their homes and be active in the community. They go into Head Starts, day cares, and schools, and interact with young children and babies. A lot of the children we serve have grandparents who are young---35 to 40 years old---so this gives them a chance to interact with much older people in a loving, nurturing environment. It’s a great program. The little ones get rocked and loved, and the older people have a chance to be active. It’s good for everybody involved."
