"Memphis has always been about the people and the music, and not necessarily in that order. B.B. King, Elvis, Muddy Waters, Steve Ray Vaughan, Clyde Hopkins, and a whole lot more. Everybody came here. People always said, 'If you haven't played Memphis, you haven't played', so musicians from everywhere would come to Beale Street. I remember when I was a kid and they'd be lined up all along here, sitting on Coca-Cola cases with their tip buckets in front of them, just to say they'd played Memphis. I was shining shoes right across the street, and I saw and heard them all."
