“A lot of the people I grew up with didn’t make it as far as I have. They wanted to be the best basketball player or the best something else, but they got off course. Some of them quit. Some are deceased. We live surrounded by drugs, prostitution, and gangs---just a lot of bad stuff---and for guys my age and younger, there’s a lot of pressure to be something, to make a name for yourself. So many kids out here are hurting and broken and growing up without any real guidance from their parents. Even if they have two parents, it’s as though they don’t even exist because the parents do what they want to do; they tell their children one thing and do another. If I have a child, I want to be involved in that child’s life. I want to guide him or her and teach them to do the right thing.
“I started skateboarding and dancing as a way to escape the reality that surrounded me. I spend my time now working and dancing with the M-Town Image & Dance Group. When I first started, I set out to be the greatest dancer in the world, but they told me, ‘There’s no award for that. You’re in a group now. How about you aim to be part of the best dance group in the world.’ They helped me understand that I didn’t have to be better than everybody else. That’s where I learned how to cooperate, get along with people, and work with a group.
"I live life walking in a straight line. Sure, I can look both ways, but there's only one door of opportunity and it's not closed. It's easy to make a mess, but if you're willing to do something with the mess you've made, the door is still open."
