“I majored in aerospace engineering, then went to medical school, and now I’m at the University of Memphis working on a Ph.D. in tissue engineering. It’s really interesting trying to understand biological systems from an engineering standpoint. We recreate structures---using cells, other materials, and signals---to replace damaged or diseased tissues in people. The ultimate goal is to have parts that you can exchange, like you do with a machine. That’s very far away, but that’s the goal. For a person who has suffered an accident or an injury, this could make a huge difference in their quality of life.”
