"We started the Urban Passion Parade and Play eleven years ago as a way to plant the seed of God's love in this community. There is so much hopelessness around us, but there are a lot of great things going on too. Our aim is to let the neighborhood know that this church loves them, this pastor loves them, and that there are community organizations out here that love and support them too. We're out to spread the love of Christ. Love is the light, and darkness cannot put it out. We're all on God's team, and we all have a part to play. During the parade one year, I overheard a grandmama on the sidelines pointing and telling her little grandson, 'You see that man right there? That's Jesus who died for our sins. He's passing by.' Hearing that made me realize again why we do this. It gives people an opportunity to tell someone about Jesus."
The parade proceeds up Lauderdale and ends at the church on Vance Avenue.
Those accompanying Jesus wave palm branches and shout: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
