“My daughter’s name means 'Intelligent, powerful, servant to the Ever-Living.' Sometimes I call her by her name, sometimes by its meaning. I want her to always remember who she is and to live into her name. It’s powerful for her; it gives her the strength that she needs to reach her goals in life. I want her to continue to be great, to be happy within herself, proud of who she is, and unapologetic to be an African-American Muslim.”
