"Our family volunteers at a soup kitchen a few times a year. It started one Christmas at church when everyone was asked to choose a way to become more involved in the community. Some friends were already working there, and they helped us get started. I think the experience has helped our children realize that people who are homeless are just people, that they may have hard lives but they deserve to be loved and cared for like anyone else, and that joy doesn't come from owning a bunch of things."
